Presentation SkillsStanding up in front of an audience to make an important presentation is one of the most generally feared experiences of managers. We aim to provide guidelines and practical experience which will help in the process. Whilst not offering a cure for the anxiety that will for many always precede an important presentation or performance, it should prevent some of the most feared disasters. The probability of avoiding these soon quells the fear of what is preventable, leaving only the fear of the unexpected. The unexpected can always happen but being in good shape at the start is the best preparation for the unexpected. The methods used are extremely simple and practical, whilst at the same time opening the way for later development of ever higher levels of skill in self-management. From the beginning the three part formula, STOP - ORGANISE - DO, of the Alexander Technique is applied to the processes of preparation, presentation and recovery after the presentation. Understanding the body and developing greater coordination and balance is a prerequisite for two things, (1) feeling more balanced and coordinated and (2) projecting a balanced and coordinated image. Body use affects both how one feels and what one communicates with one's body. In addition to limited goals centred around presentation skills, skill in coordinating our bodies has a widely generalisable application carrying benefits both for the individual and for the work organisation.
